In 1979, Paramount released "Star Trek: The Motion Picture". Embraced at once by critics and fans alike, the film received Academy Awards for Best Set Decoration, Best Visual Effects and Best Musical Score. William Shatner won a Best Actor award for his portrayal of Admiral Kirk and Persis Khambatta a nomination for Best Actress. Praised across the media for its brisk pacing, taut dialog and engrossing script, the film left fans and critics clamoring for more. Within a month after the release of Star Trek: The Motion Picture, the green light was given for a relaunch of the television series. Following a development cycle worthy of the Manhattan Project, "Star Trek: The New Series" debuted in fall of 1980.

In the pilot episode, "Enemy of My Enemy", Admiral Kirk leads the crew of the USS Enterprise on a rescue mission inside Romulan space. Through an odd turn of events, they join forces with a Romulan vessel and attempt to understand a mysterious force threatening both Federation and Romulan colonies in the area.

[engage nitpicking with preemptive apologies]

If it's basically Star Trek: Phase II with the TMP as a movie pilot, doesn't that mean that ST:III/IV didn't happen and therefore the Big E should be the -1701 and not the -1701-A?

[end nitpicking]

Awesome picture, though! My particular preferred-alternate-real-world-Trek-history would be one where the 1980s fanon didn't get murdered by Enterprise...

Ahhhh. Good point. One uses the models available. So, in this universe, it's 1701-A.

Thanks for the kind words.

In this universe, the "refit" actually is recognized as a rebuild (the Enterprise-class) so Starfleet upped the hull number to reflect this since the Naval Register had -1701 down as a Constitution-class for equipping, spares, and opstempo scheduling, none of which really applied anymore.

Problem solved! :D

Brisk pacing---did we see the same movie?
I loved it---sat in the theater all day, watching it over and over---but there's a reason a lot of critics called it "the motionless picture".
A lot of ponderous scenes as Enterprise flew through V'Ger's energy cloud slowed the action, but it was frelling brilliant sci-fi.
Love this image, just the same.
